AND IN MEMORY OF
GABRIELLA STIRLING
WHO ENTERED INTO REST APRIL 29, 1892.
HEAD MISTRESS
OF ST JOHN'S NATIONAL SCHOOL 18 YEARS
PLACED IN LOVING MEMORY
BY THE TEACHERS AND GIRLS.

Gabriella Stirling (or Sterling) was born in 1847 in Westminster. In 1873 she was infants Mistress at East Street Infants School, Littlehampton. She was only 45 when she died.

St. John's National School, was opened in 1835 in a building also used as a Sunday school. In 1836 a permanent school, for 526 children, was built in Great North Street on land previously occupied by a brewery, with the aid of a government grant. The choice of site was unfortunate. Stratford railway junction and repair works were soon built close by and noise from the trains made teaching difficult. In 1872 new buildings, with accommodation for 900, were erected in Chant Square. In 1886 it reported average attendances of 700. The boys department was closed in 1894. The school was reorganized in 1938 for mixed juniors and infants. It was closed in 1947.
